How To Easily Paint Your Computer Case

We love not having to spend money on new things. Learn how you can redo your old laptop case using paint instead of purchasing a new one.

What You Need To Know

  • BEGINNER-FRIENDLY – Don’t overthink it. Just start painting shapes.
  • TIME – You can do this DIY project in a few minutes to an hour.
  • INEXPENSIVE – Use supplies you already have and save from buying a new case.
  • PREP IS IMPORTANT – The most important part is to make sure you clean your laptop case really well so your paint can adhere.

The “Before” Case

My pink laptop case had some wear and tear on it. You can see that the pink was very dirty from just rubbing on the edges of my bag.

Here is my specific laptop case model in case you want to compare the surface we painted with the one you will be painting.

What do you use to seal the laptop case?

You can use Mod Podge to help seal your laptop case. Painting in thin layers and allowing time to dry is the best method. We add a little sparkle by using this Mod Podge.

More Projects Using Mod Podge – We always have different types of this clear coat on hand, for everything from painting a baby helmet to making DIY nail polish mugs.

Abstract Art Ideas

  • Color block out large areas first with lighter colors
  • Keep adding organic shapes
  • Blend in darker paints for a more dimensional feel
  • Add small lines, dots and shapes with a small brush
  • Repeat shapes and lines in different areas to create balance

  • Landscapes with simple shapes
  • Blended colors (think ombre effect)
  • Simple floral designs
  • Graffiti name design
  • Geometric shapes
  • Use painter’s tape to create a more geometric abstract design

There are so many different cool laptop cases out there that you can “shop” and be inspired like we were.

Notes About Paints

  • We used acrylic paint like this bottle. I would not recommend using the cheapest kind, but a medium of the road paint quality will work.
  • No need to use the highest artistic quality paints.

Painting Tutorial

Step 1: Clean Case

Clean the areas using the rough side of a sponge with soap and water (green sponges are our go-to).

Let fully dry before starting to paint.

Step 2: Use Acrylic Paint

Begin designing with acrylic paint. We did an abstract-type design inspired by this cover we were thinking of buying.

Step 3: Add More Details With Paint

Consider flipping the brush over to get dots and let the paint fully dry.

Step 4: Add Clear Coat

Once the paint is fully dry, you will use a small foam brush to add a layer of Mod Podge. (Get the sparkly type here)

Step 5: Apply 2-3 More Layers Of Mod Podge

Let each layer dry in between and use the foam brush to add another layer for extra protection. If your case feels a little sticky, place it outside to dry. This happens when you do not let the Mod Podge or paint fully dry.

Tips

  • Make sure your case is completely clean. A rough sponge should help rough up the surface well.
  • If your paint does not seem to adhere, use fine sandpaper to give the paint tooth to stick to.
  • You can also wipe the surface with a deglosser to really get the paint to adhere.
  • Be patient in between layers of Mod Podge. You want each layer to fully dry.

The best part is that our case has held up 3 years later. We love it when simple craft projects add a homemade touch to our lives.
